Two-wheeler Market Situation

1. Taiwan's exports of electric bicycles and parts increased

Taiwan's bicycle market recovers

Taiwan's exports of electric bicycles and parts increased in the first quarter of 2025, driven by growing demand for high-value products and higher average unit prices, according to preliminary data from the Taiwan Bicycle Business Association (TBA).

Taiwan's electric bicycle exports increased year-on-year for the first time since the outbreak, reaching US$236 million (about 207 million euros) from January to April, an increase of 0.26%. The average export price of each electric bicycle exceeded US$2,000, reaching US$2,023 (about 1,776 euros), an increase of about 12.03% over the same period in 2024. The chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Business Association said: "Although export volume continues to decline, export value has increased, which highlights Taiwan's successful transformation to the high-end market. The price of an electric bicycle is usually equivalent to that of three traditional bicycles, which has prompted many Taiwanese manufacturers to increase their investment in the research and development of electric bicycles."

Bicycle Parts

Bicycle parts exports also improved significantly, reaching USD 437 million (EUR 384 million) in the January-April period, up 5.92% year-on-year. TBA said the growth was mainly due to a recovery in new bicycle orders and continued demand from OEMs for replacement and aftermarket parts. Robert Wu noted: "There are signs of recovery in the new bicycle market, especially in Europe and North America. Although the industry remains cautious, current data shows that the market is gradually stabilizing and refocusing on high-end innovation." The latest export figures are being closely watched ahead of Eurobike 2025, where many of Taiwan's leading manufacturers are expected to launch new achievements and consolidate their position in the global high-end electric mobility sector.

Industry Trends

The Taiwan Bicycle Business Association will share further insights into current market trends in Taiwan's bicycle industry at the Taiwan External Trade Development Council's press conference at Eurobike on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 1:30 pm in the Logos+Genius meeting room in Hall 9.1 at Messe Frankfurt.

The French e-scooter market continues to decline. According to the eighth edition of the Micromobility Market Barometer jointly released by Mobilians and Smart Mobility Lab, 2024 will be the third consecutive year of decline in the motorized personal mobility device (EDPM) market, where e-scooters dominate the market.

Overall

In 2024, total sales of electric scooters in France fall to 615,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 9%. The total market value also falls by 8%, totaling €254 million. This is the third consecutive year of decline, after sharp declines in 2023 (-10.7%) and 2022 (-16%). "In 2024, the electric scooter market shows a controlled decline, with average prices continuing to rise," the report states. In fact, the average selling price rises by 1.5% to €414, which may indicate a shift towards more durable and better equipped models.

Market Segments

Scooters priced under €500 now account for 74% of total sales, up 8% from 2023. In contrast, premium models priced over €500 have fallen to 26%. The report states that "after four years of steady decline, the sub-€500 segment rebounds in 2024 with more premium products." This shift reflects changing consumer expectations. As the report explains, "users are increasingly focusing on safety, range, and repairability," and even in the entry-level segment, demand is growing for models with upgraded components, such as improved braking systems and durable materials. The recession is one of the reasons for this, as is the lack of after-sales support for foreign scooters sold online. These companies, the report explains, "have intensified competition, ultimately to the detriment of consumers."

The report calls on the government to restore the balance: "It is vital that the state supports the industry in combating unfair competition by creating a level playing field. Promote more responsible practices and combat uncontrolled imports." Despite the decline in sales, the market situation is not bad, in fact it is transforming. "Electric scooters remain the market leader and are supported by the market's renewal momentum," the study emphasizes. In summary, although sales are down, consumers are turning to more professional models that are better suited for frequent use, especially in urban areas.
