Raleigh parent company to partner with Dutch company Refurb Battery to repurpose used e-bike batteries
Raleigh-based parent company Accell Group and Dutch company Refurb Battery are looking to reduce CO2 emissions by repurposing discarded e-bike batteries, following a successful trial of 5,000 used e-bike batteries.
Refurb Battery is a Dutch company that is developing a recycling energy storage system. The company said it recently evaluated more than 5,000 used e-bike batteries, with a total weight of more than 16 tons, and that more than 100,000 battery cells could be recycled.
In addition to reducing the waste of lithium ions and saving raw materials, reuse also reduces the carbon dioxide emissions generated by producing new batteries. Refurb Battery said that if these batteries had to be produced new, the emissions would exceed 100 tons of carbon dioxide.
Jonas Nilsson, Chief Operating Officer of the Accell Group, said: "As Europe's leading manufacturer of e-bikes, Accell contributes to society by providing sustainable mobility solutions. By giving batteries a second life longevity, our products become more sustainable, reducing the carbon footprint of our all road e-bikes."
Accell Group and Refurb Battery will also continue to collaborate, exchanging data and insights to further improve bicycle battery life, collection and reuse. They said the aim of the collaboration is to increase the recycling of the entire bicycle battery in the future.

Sales of bicycles and e-bikes will be slightly higher in 2022, Tandem Group says
Tandem Group's latest trading update shows that for the year to December 31, 2023, the company expects losses of between £900,000 and £1.3 million, with revenue expected to be between £22 million and £23 million. Sales of e-bikes and bikes do bring some good news, however.
Tandem said: "The domestic sales market is proving to be more challenging than previously expected. However, these dismal figures are underpinned by a good performance in its bike sales."
The company said sales of bicycles, including e-bikes, were still significantly higher than last year, with its new range of e-bikes helping sales in the region more than double last year. Likewise, Tandem's lightweight children's bike, the Squish, performed better than the previous year. These positive results come against the backdrop of a severe downturn in UK cyclical markets, reflecting wider economic challenges and post-pandemic impacts.
The group said it had added three new national retailers, bolstering its confidence in its resilience and growth.
The group recently announced a partnership with Cyclefit to introduce Quella fix and eBikes into its products.
