Rad Power Bikes Will Certify Its Electric-assist Bikes To UL Standards

Rad Power Bikes announced Tuesday that all of its e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries will be UL certified going forward.

That's based on a requirement coming this month from New York City that all e-bikes sold be UL certified. UL 2849 is a safety standard used to test and certify entire systems, including chargers and batteries, for electrical, fire and mechanical hazards, in addition to evaluating software monitoring and maintenance safety features. Lithium-ion battery packs sold individually in New York City must comply with UL 2271 standards.

A spokesperson for Rad Power Bikes told BRAIN on Tuesday: “While the brand produces e-bikes that comply with UL standards, this announcement formalizes Rad’s current and future fleet’s UL compliance with both standards through a UL-approved third-party laboratory. Regularity."

New York City's lithium-ion battery safety legislation was signed into law in March in response to numerous fires caused by batteries in tiny mobile devices. Distributors who fail to comply with recognized certifications such as UL will face certain civil penalties and then fines of up to $1,000 per violation.
