EU Battery Recycling Bill Passes

The European Council adopted a new EU Battery Bill on July 10th. The purpose of the new bill is to strengthen a series of regulations on battery recycling and disposal to ensure the safety and recyclability of battery products. It also requires manufacturers of electrically assisted bicycles to provide for the feasibility of replacing each battery individually.

The bill sets specific recycling targets for light transportation (LMT) batteries, with 51% recycled by 2028 and 61% by 2031.

In addition to the battery recycling provisions, the bill also includes provisions for e-passports and QR codes for batteries, giving member states and manufacturers enough time to prepare. The passport and QR code provisions will be implemented in 2026 and 2027 respectively.
