Chinese authorities proposed stricter technical standards for electric-assisted bicycles, limiting the maximum design speed of electric-assisted bicycles to 25 kilometers per hour, in order to improve safety and better regulate the country's rapidly growing electric-assisted bicycle industry.
The new standards, proposed by multiple ministries including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, were open for public comments on Thursday.
One of the important updates is the enhancement of the flame retardant performance of electric-assisted bicycles. The revised standards require stricter flame retardant requirements for non-metallic materials used in electric-assisted bicycles, while limiting the use of plastic parts.
The new standards also propose to add functions such as real-time communication and Beidou satellite positioning to ensure the safety of electric-assisted bicycles through dynamic monitoring.
In addition, in order to curb illegal modifications, the standards also stipulate that controllers, batteries and chargers must be "interoperable", making tampering more difficult technically.

Ltd. announced the release of a market assessment report, the main content of which is: Global electric bicycle market size, share and trend analysis report, by category (Class I, Class II, Class III), speed (up to 25 km/h, 25-45 km/h), battery type (lithium ion, lithium ion polymer, lead acid), mode (pedal assist, throttle), components (battery, motor, fork frame, wheel set, crank disc, brake system and motor controller), motor type (hub and mid-mounted), purpose (mountain electric bicycle, travel electric bicycle, city electric bicycle, cargo electric bicycle, road electric bicycle), ownership (shared and personal) - market outlook and industry analysis 2031.
The report shows that the global electric bicycle market size is expected to exceed USD 102.64 billion by 2031, with a CAGR of 11.93% during the forecast period.
Bicycles equipped with an integrated electric motor drive mechanism and battery to provide drive or auxiliary propulsion are called electric bicycles. The power of electric bicycles ranges from electric bicycles with a small electric motor to assist the rider in pedaling to more powerful electric bicycles that are fully throttle operated. The market is expected to grow due to factors such as government regulations to promote the use of electric bicycles, consumer inclination to use electric bicycles as an environmentally friendly and efficient commuting solution, increasing fuel costs, and increasing interest in cycling as a fitness and recreational activity. Advances in battery technology and bicycle infrastructure are expected to provide good potential for expanding the electric bicycle market.
