The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has asked Accell Group cargo brand Babboe to stop selling its bikes after it failed to investigate a series of reported frame breakages as required by law.
Babboe, which designs pedal assist cargo bike for families, responded by saying it would temporarily stop selling all cargo bikes. The brand said it would immediately begin working with security authorities to provide them with information.
The agency began investigating late last year after discovering multiple frame damage. Authorities said Babboe had received multiple reports of its frame breaking in recent years but had not investigated the cause. While safety authorities did not say whether any injuries were caused, it could have been very serious. For example, children can fall off bicycles. This happens especially in heavy traffic.
According to the safety department, cargo bikes can be sold again once they are deemed safe with "complete technical documentation." The agency will work with the line prosecutor to determine whether it is necessary to open a criminal investigation.
Authorities said Gbagbo was responsible for organizing the recall. Consumers and businesses can contact the customer contact center.
Last month, Accell announced plans to merge its two factories in Heerenveen, where Babboe's products will be produced. In 2018, Accell acquired Velosophy, which owns the Babboe brand.
